The packets I have from my two mentors, Bonnie J. Rough and Kate Hopper (one will be my mentor for Fall quarter) has me reading selections from other students in the program and preparing comments about what I noticed in their work. I have assigned reading to do, both from the mentors and from my own studies for my work. My initial stab at a Bibliography incudes:

A couple of these books are memoirs similar to the topic area I'm working on, all are recent publications. Others are potential resources for use in getting a rough baseline. More will appear on my blog Escape the Disease as I work. Since I've generally stayed away from memoir as a matter of preference for fiction, I've also read several memoirs to see how they tackled the issue of what to include. In general memoirs select a topic out of an entire life, and specific moments out of an entire life. It has to face issues of dealing with history in terms of voice and language.
I've also bought several books on writing the Memoir to help isolate some of the issues with writing in this genre which is a subcategory under creative nonfiction in general. One is the use of fictional elements, another is the issue of truth and family reactions.
